I 100% agree that Michael Jackson is a key contributor to pop/funk/disco!
Part of why I love this song so much is the groovy bass line, so I'm happy that you highlighted it:) You can also hear the electric guitar playing on the offbeats, contrasting the drums which adds so much depth to the piece. Keen musicianship right there!
A big musical element of funk and disco music is BRASS which are featured in this piece. I also hear orchestral elements (violins) throughout the piece, which reminds me of the Bee Gee's, specifically their song "More Than a Woman."

ReplyDeleteI agree with your whole analysis and how Michael Jackson made the path for the upcoming pop artist today. You described the rhythm of the song perfectly. I would also like to add that the added trumpet (I think that’s the instrument playing as well) and flute has a nice melody that goes along with the other instruments. It adds a jazzy feeling to the music like his other songs.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fine piece from Michael Jackson, it’s clear why he was such a star. Still, it’s not really my cup of tea. From his singing and dancing, it’s clear he was very talented. If I still danced it could a lot of fun, I may have to try it out on my wife. Despite how hell he does it, the whole thing just feels manufactured to me, formulaic. It feels like Temperton and Jones were doing math, and got what they wanted; a big hit, and lots of money.
