In 1894,  Edward B. Marks and Joe Stern hired an electrician named George Thomas and other artists to promote their song "The Little Lost Child." Using a magic lantern, Thomas projected many still images on a screen simultaneous to live performances. Little did they know that it would be one of the first steps towards creating the music video.



The Scopitone 


The Scopitone jukebox was an early technological innovation that can be seen as a precursor to the development of modern music videos. The Scopitone introduced key concepts and elements that influenced the evolution of visual content in music.








The launch of MTV (Music Television)in the 1980s revolutionized the music industry. Music videos became a new and exciting way for artists to promote their music. MTV was a 24-hour channel that only played music videos. It was a new way to experience music. While you listened to your favorite song, you also got to enjoy visual effects that guided you through the story behind the lyrics. Artists now have a new way of interacting with their audiences and bringing even more life to their songs. MTV gave artists a platform to promote their music through videos. Before MTV, music videos were scarce and had little exposure. They were mainly shown on television variety shows. With the creation of MTV, a new era had begun where music and visuals flowed together to give people a unique immersive experience. One of the most revolutionary music videos during this time was Michael Jackson's “Thriller.” People were tuning into MTV to see premieres of new music videos. MTV’s golden era lasted until 1990. MTV gradually lost the public's interest with the rise of technology and online streaming services in the 2000s.

 Entering the 1990s and 2000s, digital editing and computer-generated imagery became tools for creating music videos. Which made a significant shift in the music industry


 Now, artists and directors have limitless creativity at their fingertips. They could create music videos that embodied a director's vision and an artist's talent. It allowed storytelling to take off, and artists could express themselves in new ways. These new tools began a new era where artists could create music videos that were more aesthetically pleasing and awe-inspiring—making music videos a stable art form in the music industry.

    It was fascinating to learn about the history of music videos. What do you think about how much hip-hop, has influenced the music video scape? I would love to hear your opinion. Its also very fascinating how after the internet got very popular and especially with social media sites, such as YouTube, MTV started to become obsolete. Fun fact the very first song to ever be played on MTV was: "Video Killed the Radio Star," by The Buggles.
